What to Do After a Car Accident

Even the safest of all drivers may one day be involved in an accident caused by the carelessness of another driver. In the event of an accident, it is important to stay calm and follow a series of steps to prevent further injuries and to ensure that all victims get the help they need as soon as possible. If at all possible, follow these basic procedures after an accident:

  • Check to make sure no one in your vehicle, including yourself, is seriously injured. Contact emergency medical assistance immediately if you think anyone in your vehicle or another vehicle may be hurt.
  • Turn on your hazard lights, get out of the vehicle, and move to a safe area out of the way of traffic.
  • Contact the police even if there are no injuries so that an officer can file an official police report. Only discuss the details of the accident with the police officer, not the other party involved.
  • Collect insurance information from the other drivers involved in the accident. Contact your insurance company to report the accident.

Remember that emotions usually run high even after minor accidents, but it is important never to admit blame for the accident or discuss details with anyone but the police officer.
